Facts and fiction about wearing eyeglasses

Growing up we often encounter all kinds of misconceptions about wearing eyeglasses along with countless myths about vision problems.

How can we differentiate fact from fiction?

Wearers become dependent on their eye glasses, they will never take them off. FICTION
Prescription glasses correct your vision. Day-to-day tasks are easier because everything is clear. You constantly wear your glasses not out of dependence, but because all your visual difficulties disappear.

Wearing eye glasses will not aggravate your vision problems. FICTION
Eye glasses are aids to improve vision. They will not add to your sight problems. Our vision naturally deteriorates with age, so don’t fret because it is not the eye glasses’ fault. Regular eye check up will help identify the problem and the right prescription glasses can help you see clearly.

Wearing someone else’s glasses will ruin your eyes. FACT
This is so true. Wearing the wrong prescription glasses for a long period can cause headache and nausea. Go for an eye check-up and determine the right prescription for you.

Ready-made reading glasses may not address your vision problems. FICTION
Store bought reading glasses are not customized for the wearer mainly because the prescription grade is the same for both right and left lenses. Most people with vision problems have different prescription grades for each eye. Headache, eye strain and even nausea can result from wearing reading glasses that are not your actual prescription. Best to visit you eye doctor for a customized reading glasses prescription.

It is important that we take the necessary precautions in taking care of our eyes but we have to be aware of what’s true and what is not.

For the ultimate in eye care, Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company recommends Varilux® the optimum solution to achieve natural, sharper vision at any distance.

Don’t let myths keep you from proper eye care. Be confident and wear glasses with Varilux®. For more information, visit Essilor’s website at www.essilor.com.ph, and follow @EssilorPH on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Understanding age-related vision problems

Be more productive by learning about age-related vision problems. Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, shares common age-related vision changes and tips on how to minimize the risks:

Blurred vision. Reading printed materials can become less clear, in part because the lens in your eyes becomes less flexible as you age. Objects can also appear hazy or out of focus at certain distances. When this happens, take time to rest your eyes for a few seconds. It also helps to exercise your eye muscles by regularly blinking.

Dry eyes. Aging also causes our bodies to produce fewer tears. Some people experience a burning sensation, stinging or eye discomfort related to dry eyes. Use artificial tears as needed throughout the day for comfort or best consult your eye doctor for prescription dry eyes medication.

Sensitivity to bright lights. When driving, you may notice additional glare from other cars, street lights or sun reflecting off windshields. This is because, as you age, the light entering your eyes tend to scatter rather than be focused precisely on the retina. It is important to be more cautious when driving and if possible, avoid driving at night.

Decreased color vision. While aging, normal colors can also decline in sensitivity, causing things around you to become less bright and contrast between different colors becomes less noticeable.

Correct age-related vision problems with Varilux® X seriesTM, a new premium progressive lens designed to help people 40 years old and above achieve clearer, better vision.

Manufactured by Essilor, this latest innovation progressive lens is developed using Xtend™, a new revolutionary technology which provides seamless vision between distances – near, mid or far. It also eliminates eye constraints, reduces glare and vividly brings out colors for wearers to enjoy edge-to-edge clarity.

Celebrate National Sight Saving Month by understanding age-related vision problems and achieving clearer, better eyesight. See life more clearly with the Varilux® X seriesTM progressive lenses.

Happy 100th Birthday Nikon!

Iconic brand’s Spectacle Lenses unlock the future with the power of light based on 100 years of technology.

Nikon, the global leader in digital imaging and optics, is now a hundred years old! For a century, Nikon has relentlessly pursued the infinite possibilities of light, harnessing the power of lenses to contribute to the advancement of imaging culture and sciences.

Since its establishment in 1917 as Nippon Kogaku K.K., Nikon has been at the very heart of innovation and development. Starting out as a manufacturer of optical glass and optical instruments.  The optical lens business started in 1946 with the sale of the Pointal lens. Nikon has since then been a leading innovator in the field of ophthalmic optics with breakthrough innovations in material, design, and coatings.  In 1983, Nikon introduces a high performance anti-glare coating with true, built-in scratch resistance. This technology becomes immediately popular in Japan, where nearly all of lenses now feature this type of coating.

This iconic brand has also contributed to the development of the optical industry, creating breakthrough technologies and high-quality, award-winning products in the process. It introduced the anti-glare coating, Hard Clear Coat (HCC), with true, built-in scratch resistance as early as 1983; the first ultra-high index lens, Index 1.74, in 2000; the first Single Vision lens, custom made according to frame shape – SeeMax – in 2002; and the first eye strain relief lens – Relaxsee – in 2005. Today, all Nikon Single Vision lenses feature its trademark Advanced Aspheric Design for sharp clear vision with limited peripheral distortion. Besides designing new digital lenses, it also continues to produce coatings that protect lenses against dust, water, abrasions and scratches, in addition to eliminating reflections and enhancing visual clarity.

In its pursuit of the endless possibilities of light, Nikon has gained extensive expertise ranging from optics and materials to image-processing and simulations such as ultra-thin ophthalmic lenses and digital cameras, to name a few. In fact, the quality of its products has earned praise among consumers around the world while setting the very standards recognized and adopted by eye care specialists themselves.

The brand “Nikon” inspires visionaries who share its belief that “some great things are not visible with the naked eyes, but perfect sight will allow you to see what it takes to achieve them.”

Filled with appreciation for the previous 100 years, Nikon moves forward to the next century, where its role will be in creating new values for a brighter future.

Why do I need an eye exmination?

Keep your eyes healthy with an annual eye check-up

Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, reminds everyone to go for an eye check-up as part of the educational campaign of Crizal®, one of the company’s flagship brands.

The campaign, Create beautiful moments, actively encourages the public to have their eyes checked as Essilor believes that beautiful moments in life deserve the clearest vision.

Protecting healthy eyes is as important as correcting vision problems,” explains Essilor general manager, Dr. Emelita Roleda. “Through the Create beautiful moments campaign, we can educate the public on the value of healthy eyesight, for everyone to realize that it need not take a missed moment to have a reason to visit your eye doctor. Everyone should have an eye check up at least once a year.”

A visit to your optometrist will reveal more just your current prescription. Your eye doctor can also determine what preventive actions you should take against permanent damage and can even provide great insights into your general well-being. Aside from checking how well your eye muscles work, the optometrist can also gauge if you are suffering from any ailment that can affect your eyesight and your overall health, including diabetes and glaucoma.

Your vision dictates both how you see life and how you live it. Regardless of age and physical health, routine eye check-ups are vital to keep your eyes healthy and stay focused on life’s moments.  Crizal® allows Filipinos to live life more clearly with its line of Anti-reflective lenses.

Whether prescription, for outdoor activity, indoor use or part of a digital lifestyle, these lenses filter and deflect harmful UV and blue light, lowering the risk of eye fatigue and preventing long-term vision damage. Crizal® lenses are available at leading optical shops and through eye care professionals nationwide.

Essilor Crizal® Prevencia’s multi-coated lenses filter out harmful blue-violet light from gadgets, LED TVs, LED lights, fluorescent lights

Wearing just any kind of glasses is not enough. It is important to choose the right lens to get the best protection,” explains Emelita Roleda, general manager of Essilor Philippines, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company.

Dr. Roleda explains that there are two types of lenses: uncoated and multi-coated lenses. Uncoated lenses are prone to damage and don’t provide protection against elements that threaten healthy vision. Using multi-coated lenses enhance the performance, quality and life of glasses. Invest on high quality lenses as it will really pays off in the long run, in terms of benefits to one’s eyesight.”

Meanwhile, multi-coated lenses are more advanced and tightly controlled due to computer processes. These lenses are evenly layered, can withstand high temperature and offer more improved performance.

Essilor’s Crizal® Prevencia is a multi-coated lens made with smart technology that filters out harmful blue-violet and UV lights emitted by the sun, gadgets, LED TVs, LED lights and fluorescent lights. On top of preventing long-term vision damage, it allows good light that helps regulate sleep and mood, and boosts brain activity.
